Village Life of Kunhimangalam

Kunhimangalam, a tiny, charming village in Kannur, takes great pride in its pristine surroundings and centuries-old metalwork.

While Kannur is a land steeped in folklore and natural beauty, Responsible Tourism gives visitors a firsthand look at daily life there. Kunhimangalam, a tiny, charming village in Kannur, takes great pride in its pristine surroundings and centuries-old metalwork. It is one of the lesser-known tourist attractions in Kannur, closer to Payyanur.

On the banks of the Perumba River is a small community of ‘moosaris’ who specialise in bronze or bell metal work. Made without any modern machinery, artisans create idols, lamps and other objects - proof of their unmatched talent in the 900-year-old craft which has been passed down through the generations. Artists use myths as an inspiration. These intricate works are created using individual molds, each of which are used only once.

Idols made of panchaloha (five metals) by artisans from Kunhimangalam can be found in many temples throughout South India. The Lakshmi vilakku (lamp) in particular, featuring the goddess Lakshmi, is the most popular in most households, as it is seen as a symbol which will bring prosperity to one’s home. In 2018, the State government designated Kunhimangalam as a heritage village and bell-metal sculpture as a heritage artwork.
